Could I Have Gout?

If you have this painful type of inflammatory arthritis (which can affect any joint, thought it typically hits the toes), you know it hurts. But there are ways to convince gout to go easy on your body.
If you’re plagued by joint pain such as gout, our team at AFC Urgent Care Farragut can help you find relief.

What Causes Gout?

Sometimes, your body can build up too much uric acid. The acid causes uric acid crystals to develop in your body. These crystals most often accumulate in your joints, where they can cause intense pain.
In general, men, overweight people, people with diabetes and people who have kidney trouble are more likely to develop gout. Certain foods and drinks can also promote gout. These include alcohol, red meat, and seafoods including shellfish, anchovies, sardines and tuna.

Gout Symptoms

  • Joint pain
  • Joint is hot to the touch
  • Visible swelling and redness

How Can I Get Rid of Gout?

You can’t completely cure gout, but you can prevent flare-ups. First, your doctor will order lab tests during an active gout spell. He or she will look for uric acid crystals in the painful joint.
After a positive diagnosis, your provider may prescribe medicine for pain and to lower uric acid levels. He or she will suggest changes in your diet to limit gout’s effects.

  • Drink in moderation or not at all.
  • Limit red meat—especially organ meat—and seafood.
