How Can I Practice Good Sun Safety Habits This Summer?

How Dangerous Is Exposure to the Sun? The sun gives off rays of light, known as UV rays that are absorbed by your outermost layer of skin. However, with prolonged or extreme sun exposure, these rays are allowed to work their way to your inner skin layers, causing sunburn, the death of skin cells and the increased likelihood of cancer.

Symptoms of Sun Exposure

  • Pink or red tones on the skin
  • Skin that is hot to the touch, sometimes with goosebumps or chills
  • Dehydration
  • Peeling

How Can Good Sun Safety Habits Protect Me?

Developing good sun safety habits is all about preventing these harmful UV rays from being able to access your skin and potentially cause damage. The less exposure your skin has to the sun, the less likely you are to develop issues later in life due to exposure.

Ways to Protect Yourself From the Sun

  • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30.
  • Wear loose, long clothing that is rated to block UV rays.
  • Stay indoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when possible.
  • Seek shade when outdoors.
